A Different light
arts|generate Thurrock
A photography exhibition and poetry workshops exploring perceptions of place as part of arts|generate Thurrock.
The aims and objectives of this project were to involve local people in creative workshops and help establish Thurrock as an interesting and vibrant place to be.
Thurrock Council worked in partnership with a photographer, performance poets and community groups to create a series of photographs and poems that looked at Thurrock in ‘A Different Light’. This was one of a series of projects that were developed for and delivered in Thurrock between June 2003 and March 2006 as part of arts|generate Thurrock and resulted in a photography exhibition, a poetry performance and a published book.
The project began in July 2003 when photographer Richard Heeps was commissioned to provide an alternative vision of Thurrock. His work helped to change perceptions both among local residents and those outside the area when his prints were exhibited at the Thameside Theatre, Grays in March 2004 and subsequently published.
The second strand of the project centred on a number of poetry workshops led by Apples and Snakes in the spring of 2004 and delivered to priority groups such as young people at risk of offending, asylum seekers and disabled people. Artists with relevant professional experience were selected to spend 15 hours with these community groups exploring their perceptions of place. This culminated in a final showcase at the Thameside Theatre in March 2004 where participants shared their work with an audience of friends and family. The book containing a selection of the work created was later published in April 2005. Copies were given to those involved and others were sold to local residents and community groups.
