Art @ i-LAB
HAPPEN placed several artists in residence at Bedford's i-LAB
During 2006 HAPPEN created opportunities for a number of artists to develop their professional practice within the Bedford i-LAB. Bedford i-lab is an exciting new innovation centre, aimed at meeting the accommodation needs of businesses from high tech, knowledge intensive and business support sectors, providing a flexible and dynamic environment in which innovative and ideas-based businesses can thrive. HAPPEN has encouraged Bedford i-LAB to make use of its empty spaces in the medium term to create benefits for existing, new and future tenants, and raise the i-LAB’s profile, through providing free studio space for up to three artists. HAPPEN aimed to put forward artists who are a good fit with the i-LAB’s ethos: energetic, ambitious, outward-looking and working with new technologies or media.
The first artist in residence was Paul Pibworth, and his residency was intended to bring the following benefits: to develop i-LAB’s association with creativity, raise i-LAB's profile and help attract new business. Extending the idea even further, and with the very generous support of Bedford Creative Arts, Paul has provided i-LAB visitors with a new window on their world by installing a mobile camera obscura caravan in the customer parking area and also by turning his studio workspace at i-LAB into a walk-in camera.
