Being Here

arts|generate Southend

To increase opportunities for vulnerable young people and to create stronger communities.

Based in Southend, Being Here was a 3 year arts-led regeneration programme starting in 2002 which enabled young people (between 11-25) to engage with and address local issues and develop their artistic and personal skills.  The young people could work on a number of different arts based projects in areas such as photography, film, dance, journalism and drama, with all projects geared towards the needs of young people and their communities.

In addition all the artists running the workshops benefitted from training and professional development opportunities.  As the majority of these artists are local this is another way in which the project contributed to the long-term regeneration of the area.

Being Here celebrated the success of the project (so far) on the 6th April 2005 with a special event called Being Here NOW. Held at the Palace Theatre, Southend the day consisted of a mix of performance and exhibitions of the young peoples work and was attended by the young people themselves, their friends and families, community partners and funders.
