Community focused design
Green Heart Partnership - Broxbourne District Council
Through GHP, Broxbourne District Council has taken a creative approach to finding out about their community’s perceptions about their community centre and to feed these insights and suggestions into the design of the new community centre.
This project aimed to deliver a creative and innovative needs assessment for the community centre, used to brief a project design team for next stage design development activities.
Broxbourne Borough Council recognised that the redevelopment of the Wormley Community Centre was an opportunity for valuable community development.
The Green Heart Partnership Team placed artist Simon Honey as an artist in residence within the Wormley Estate, where he lead a process of consultation using creative methods. Simon was given a flat on the estate, and lived in the community from November 2005 through to early February 2006. During this time he captured individuals’ perceptions about their community’s profile and what could make a better community centre. This work has resulted in a 12 minute DVD to inform the development of the architects’ concept drawings, as well as the Officers who will be working with the Housing Association to address the activities programming onsite.
From this work, Nick Edwards of Fundamental Architectural Inclusion ran design workshops with targeted groups within the community. These suggestions and insights of the community’s needs as communicated through drawings and model-making will filter into the architect’s drawings for the renovation of the centre.
