Downside Trailblazers - Mayfield Shopping Parade improvements
arts|generate South Bedfordshire
A town planning exercise involving local people.
The aims and objectives of this project were to develop an active, motivated group of residents who can plan and realise improvements to the estate.
This project brought local people together with Free Form Arts Trust to prioritise improvements to the Mayfield Shopping Parade so that a safer, more welcoming entrance to Downside could be created. Free Form artists worked with local people to design and deliver a series of improvements to the shopping area which began with the installation of new canopy lights in 2003.
Another project involved local children in the design of railings and balconies creating a visual link between the estate name and the adjacent Downs and in 2004 three Bedfordshire artists on Free Form’s Cultural Enterprise Training course helped residents design artwork for the shops’ security shutters. This was completed in 2005 along with repainting of the flats above the shops by South Bedfordshire District Council Housing Services.
